Abstract

With more the 2900 km coastline, Egypt has an unmistakable potential of
wave energy. However, the availability of economical solar and wind resources
have postponed the investment of wave energy resources. To encourage such
investment, the development of small sized, low weight and high efficiency
wave energy converter would increase the chances to integrate wave energy
farms with the national electrical utility. The worldwide development of wave
energy converters has provided numerous conőgurations and topologies for
wave energy farm. Among these, a linear generator integrated with ŕoating
buoy would be suitable for the small waves amplitude near Egyptian coast. A
linear generator that implements Halbach array is the most proper wave energy
converter (WEC) to be implemented in Egypt. The proposed optimally
designed generators are integrated to form a module with proper voltage and
power ratings. In this thesis, the integration of small rating linear generator
modules to form a medium scale wave energy farm may be useful for on-shore
activities or integrated with grid. The study is performed for wave characteristic
available in Mediterranean sea in Egypt. Moreover, a proposal for
wave farm construction is introduced to be suitable for Egypt wave energy
in Mediterranean Sea in Sidi-Barani.
