Abstract
This study presents a contrastive analysis of some cultural problems of English /Arabic translation. The significance of this study stems from the fact that it sheds light on the points of difference that cause cultural interference between the English and Arabic during the process of translation. Hence, this cultural interference forms a hindrance in conveying the intended meaning from one language to another. The hypothesis of this study indicates that translators’ unawareness of the cultural differences between their native language and the target one leads to cultural interference between languages in translation. Thus, if translators have a cultural awareness on their own culture and the target one, this will reduce the cultural interference that occurs during the process of translation. Therefore, the study aims to investigate a) some cultural differences between English and Arabic, b) how these differences affect translators’ ability to translate from English/into Arabic and vice versa if they don’t have the knowledge of and c) how contrastive linguistics help solve the problem of cultural interference between English and Arabic. To achieve the goals of the study, the researcher first attempts a contrastive analysis of some cultural problems of English/Arabic translation. Second, two translation tests are applied on 50 fourth year students enrolled at the department of English, faculty of Arts at Damietta university in order to investigate the impact of these cultural differences on their ability to translate from English into Arabic and vice versa in the two translation tests. Data were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Results of the study show that a cultural interference occurs during the process of translation and this leads to the emergence of unacceptable answers. The study concludes that providing a contrastive analysis of the cultural differences between English and Arabic would help reduce the cultural interference during the process of translation and this would make the process of translation more effective and fruitful.
