Abstract

Ischemic heart disease is the leading cause of death in the world. Sudden cardiac arrest is responsible for more than 60% of adult death from coronary heart disease. Cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a series of actions that may significantly increase the chance of survival following cardiac arrest. In most cardiac arrests, the critical elements of CPR are chest compressions and early defibrillation. Each situation is different depending on the rescuer, the victim and circumstances, but the key to success is early intervention.
CPR is easy as C–A-B the American Heart Association just announced the 2010 CPR guidelines. Compressions push hand and fast in the center of the Victims chest airway, tilt the victim’s head back and lift the chin to open the airway breathing, give mouth-to-mouth rescue breathing.
CPR in a simplified format lays focus on providing chest compressions that help in maintaining blood flow and also oxygen in the same time. As a result, blood flow is boosted and directed properly to the brain and of the concerning patient.
Non- traditional teaching methods will focus on aseries of techniques and models for improving the conventional type of lecture that is generally used for teaching introductory colleges chemistry.
Non- traditional teaching methods are commonly know as innovative / modem blended teaching methods are methods that involve the use of technology ,animation , special effects or are generally interactive and blended in nature , it is used of computers and videos to enhance delivery content . Learner self directed and interactive in nature , several authors within this field acknowledge.
Aim of the study
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of non traditional teaching method on nurses’ performance regarding basics cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Research Hypothies:
The current study answered that: The implementation of non traditional teaching method improve nurses’ level of knowledge for basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation and nurses skills for pulmonary resuscitation.
Research design
A quasi-experimental study design will be utilized to meet the aim of this study.
Setting:
The study will be conducted at the authority of Police Hospital at El Agouza querter in Cairo.
Subject:
The subjects will include all available nurses about (150) nurses working in critical care units (CCU-ICU-ER) at El-Agouza hospital.
Study tools
1. Self administer questionnaire sheet which includes two parts;
A- Part one:
- Nurses Socio-demographic data; age, gender, qualifications and years of experience in work at critical care units.
B- Part two include:
 Nurses knowledge assessment questionnaire; to assess nurse’s level of knowledge regarding basic CPR.
Pre/post and follow up tests format to assess nurses’ knowledge regarding cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
2 - Standardized observational checklist for basic CPR skills adopted from A.H.A. filled by researcher (A.H.A., 2011).
3 - Nurse’s opinionaire sheet to assess opinion regarding the learning material and strategy.
- Developing a non-traditional teaching method ( discussion - Arabic film and booklet ) and traditional method (lecture – discussion – power point – hand-out - booklet) to be used for teaching nurses basic CPR adopted from (A.H.A., 2011).
Results of this study showed
• The present study revealed that BSc had high significant effect on knowledge of skills level about technical or diploma nurses special BSc degree.
• There were highly statistically significant differences between nurses that used lecture in traditional teaching method and nurses used non-traditional teaching film to explain knowledge and practice of CPR.
• There was highly statistically significance to understand and satisfaction of training course duration, clearness and the used methods of explanation.
• There was no statistically significance between the training course and knowledge level after finishing the course but highly statistically significance an average knowledge after 3 months of follow up.
• There were no significant correlation between years of experience and the practice level of nurses. There was also no significant relation between number of training courses and practice level.
• The results of this study concluded that:
o Application of teaching method regarding nurse’s knowledge level has positive effect on improving of nurse’s knowledge level regarding basic of cardio pulmonary resuscitation.
o Application of teaching method has positive effect on nurse’s skills level about basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
The study recommended that:
Recommendations:
• Using non-traditional teaching method should be introduced to increase nurses knowledge and practice of CPR
• Frequent training courses should be provided to nurses to update the knowledge & practice of basic CPR.
• Hospitals are strongly recommended to make training courses for the nurses in its Continues Education Department on the new guidelines related to knowledge & practice of basic CPR.
• There must be a continues evaluation of nurses practice regarding CPR in all departments especially critical care areas.
• CPR training refreshing courses is important to increase the retention of CPR knowledge.
Recommendations for future studies:
Further researches should be conducted to investigate a new teaching method on improving nurses’ knowledge, practice and attitude regarding.
