Abstract

This current study was conducted to detect the prevalence of ankle fractures in Mansoura University Emergency Hospital. The study included patients with traumatic ankle fractures presented to Mansoura University Emergency Hospital from May 2017 to May 2018. After initial stabilization effort, all patients were subjected to full history taking including age, gender, mode and time of trauma, time of arrival. The examination included general examination and local examination of the affected limb. Plain X-rays AP and Lateral views of the affected ankle joint with involvement of other regions when needed. CT scan in cases where the involvement of articular surface is suspected. Full laboratory investigations were done. The results of this study revealed the following : * There was total number of 237 cases with ankle fractures included in the study that represented 2.27% of the cases presented to Emergency department and 4.84% of the cases admitted into orthopaedic department. * The mean age of the cases was 42.8 ± 14.59 years with range between 19 and 60 years. There were 89 females (38.6%) and 148 males (62.4%). * Twisting injury was the most common cause of trauma among the cases included in the study * The right ankle was affected in 69 cases (29,1%) and left side in 166 cases (70%) while two cases were bilateral (0.8). * Closed fractures were found in 224 cases (94.5%) and open fractures in 13 cases (5.5%). * Conservative treatment was performed in 27 cases (11.4%) while 210 (88.6%) required fixation. * There was high correlation in the mean age between the cases according to the Mode of trauma as road accidents were higher in the third and fourth decade of life, while twisting injuries more common in younger patients. * There is a correlation between age and type of fracture , bimalleolar fracture is common with young age group (less than 30y)and unimalleolar fractures are associated with older patients.
