Abstract

First of all, this thesis will start by a general idea about steel constructions and mainly about the type of connections in steel structure and will also focusing on the main methods that used to categorize the different type of connections, and some principals should be obvious in the first of this study like the difference between static and dynamic loads, a quick idea about the fatigue phenomenon and the development of studying this phenomenon will be mentioned, and before the start of this study some of the previously studied of the top and seat angle connections under static and dynamic loads will be presented. This thesis will consist of three parts, first part will be a comparison between beam to column connection consist of a (top and seat angle), and this connection will be modeling in finite element program (Ansys workbench) and the same connection but have been examined as an experimental connection in site by (Abdulkadir Cüneyt Aydın, 2015)(38), the aim of this part is to verify this connection and be sure of the accuracy of the simulation in the finite element program (Ansys workbench). The second part of this thesis is a full study of about thirty six samples, each sample is beam to column connection and consist of a top and seat angle with stiffeners, the connections will be subjected to a static load, the connections will be different from each other’s according to a several criteria, first criteria is the different in the angle length, second criteria is the different in the angle section, third criteria is the influence of the angle stiffeners as if the angle stiffeners are removing or take a triangle shape, and after the simulation of these samples in (Ansys workbench) the results will be comparing according to the moment-rotation curve to reach to the optimal formation of the top and seat angle connection under the static load. The final part of the study will use the same beam to column connections as mentioned before, but the connection will be under a dynamic load instead of a static load, and it is known that the dynamic load is more realistic than the static load, therefore, the study cannot be considered complete without examining the behavior of the connections under the dynamic load, the stress-strain hysteresis loops will be obtained to each connections and will be in use to make a decision of the best connection under dynamic load.
