Abstract

Background: Pericardial fat was associated with AF prevalence and demonstrated a significant association with both paroxysmal and permanent AF even after adjusting of other risk factors. There are many modalities used for measurement of pericardial fat thickness including transthoracic echocardiogram. It has many advantages, including its low cost, easy applicable, its safety and good reproducibility The aim of the work:To prove that pericardial fat thickness would be associated with increased risk of paroxysmal and permanent AF using transthoracic echocardiographyType of study: prospective cohort study Materials and Methods This prospective study was conducted on convenient sample of 100 patients with AF (50 paroxysmal, 50 permanent) who presented to Damietta Cardiology Center outpatient echocardiography laboratory for a resting transthoracic study. The study also included 50 normal control group of healthy persons . The study and collection of patient’s data was conducted between 2018 and 2019Results: In our study, demonstrates that the thickness of pericardial fat was significantly larger in paroxysmal AF compared with control group. Similarly, permanent AF patients had a larger pericardial fat thickness compared with control group Conclusion: Based on the results of our study, it could be included that: Pericardial fat is highly associated with paroxysmal and permanent AF independent to traditional AF risk factors including LA enlargement. Our findings suggest that pericardial fat may represent a novel risk factor for AF.Despite the availability of different methods to assess pericardial fat, echocardiogram is considered a reliable , easy and effective method for its measurement Recommendations: To do more studies demonstrating the relationship between obesity and AF and other cardiac diseses.
