Abstract

Encopresis is Elimination Disorder, which defined as repeated passage of stools in inappropriate places involuntary or intentional in a child aged four years old or older, after organic causes have been ruled out. Encopresis is one of the most frustrating difficulties of young school children. It is a debilitating condition to deal with as a parent because it usually occurs over the age of children toilet training and prevalence of encopresis is significantly higher in boys, with a male to female ratio varying from 3:1 to 6:1. Children with encopresis have a reduced number of bowel movements with large stools of altered consistency and often suffer from pain during defecation. Abdominal pain and reduced appetite are typical. The colon transit time is increased, abdominal and rectal masses are palpable, daytime urinary incontinence and even enuresis co-exist. Additional emotional and behavioral disorders are found in them. There is a causal relationship between encopresis and psychological and behavioral disorders, encopresis may be a cause of them or it be secondary to these disorders. This study aimed to detect psychiatric and behavioral problems, and to assess personality traits in children with encopresis. The current study is cross-sectional case/control on 138 children, recruited from the gastroenterology surgical center at Mansoura University (MUH). They were evaluated through the following: • A semi-structured questionnaire. • Mini International Neuropsychiatric for Children and Adolescents (MINI-KID). • The Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). • The Children Apperception Test (CAT). • The Thematic Apperception Test (T.A.T.). • Stanford–Binet Intelligence Scale (Fifth Edition). The results revealed that encopresis more common in males than females aged 7 to 9 years old who may expose to stressed life events. Children with encopresis had lower scores in (IQ) test compared to control children, and they had mild behavioral disorders, also personality disorders.
