Abstract

This work aims to investigate the feasibility of manufacturing
Geopolymer concrete using recycled aggregate as a sustainable ecofriendly
concrete. Different properties of Geopolymer concrete cast using
fly ash, recycled aggregate and locally available materials were studied.
Sodium Silicate and Sodium Hydroxide solutions are used as alkali
activators in different mix proportions.
Two mixes with different Molarity were used to compare the alkaline
activator solution’s effect on the concrete properties. Geopolymer concrete
was cured under a heated oven of 800C. Geopolymer concrete samples
were compared to conventional concrete samples. Geopolymer concrete
slabs/laminates were cast using reinforced with expanded metal meshes to
study their behavior. The durability of Geopolymer concrete was
investigated through the exposure of test specimens to the acid solution and
sulfuric salt solution. A comparison between geopolymer and conventional
concretes under aggressive conditions was conducted based on the
compressive strength values.
Results showed that the geopolymer concrete nearly behaves in the same
manner as the conventional concrete. The properties of (10M) geopolymer
concrete are nearly the same as the conventional concrete. The durability
of a geopolymer is better than that of conventional concrete, especially
when exposed to sulfate or chloride attack. After exposed to the sodium
chloride solution, the compressive strength decreased for geopolymer
concrete and conventional concrete. Also, the steel reinforcement in
Geopolymer concrete protected than that in conventional concrete.
Geopolymer concrete is a sustainable durable building material, which
may stand against a corrosive environment.
