Abstract

1. In this study, plant samples golden berry.(Physalis peruvianae)and doum plant ,(Hyphaene thebaica) were collected from local markets in Egypt.
2. Extraction of these Plant samples made by different solvents (water, boiling water, ethanol 70% and acetone) followed by antibacterial activitytested for these extractions byusing well diffusion technique.
3. Eight food-borne microorganisms were used in this study, five of them were gram-negative bacteria (E.coli , Salmonella typhimorium , Salmonella entrica , Shigella dysenteriaeand Proteus mirabilis) and the other three were gram-positive (Bacillus cereus, Bacillus licheniformis and Staphylococcus aureus)
4. The results of Physalis peruvianae extracts showed high inhibition activity against all pathogens except the boiling water extract which was the weakest one on the other hand , ethanol extract was the best solvent for extraction , it gave the highest measurable inhibition zones .
5. On the other hand, Hyphaene thebaica extracts showed high inhibition activity against all pathogens except the boiling water extract which was the weakest one .,and water extract was the best solvent for extraction , it gave the highest measurable inhibition zones .
6. Generally, both gram-positive and gram-negative were susceptible to both plants extracts, especially at 50 % concentration and the most affected one from gram-positive was Staphylococcus aureus and the most affected one from gram-negative was E.coli.
7. Based on MBC/MIC ratio, we conclude that ethanolic extract(concentration 50%) of physalis peruvianae has bacteriocidal effect on three pathogenic strains (E.coli , Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus) and bacteriostatic effect on the other pathogens ( Proteus mirabilis , Salmonella typhimurium , Salmonella entrica , Shigella dysenteriae and Bacillus licheniformis) . on the other hand water extract(concentration 50%) of Hyphaene thebaica has bacteriocidal effect on three pathogenic strains (E.coli , Salmonella typhimurium and Staphylococcus aureus) and bacteriostatic effect on the other pathogens (Proteus mirabilis , Salmonella entrica , Shigella dysenteriae , Bacillus cereus and Bacillus licheniformis ).
8. Both extracts (ethanolic extract of physalis peruvianae and water extract of Hyphaene thebaica) gave results nearly the same as the result of the broad spectrum antibiotic “Ciprofloxacin”.
9. Both extracts (ethanolic extract of physalis peruvianae and water extract of Hyphaene thebaica) showed antioxidant activity against DPPH free radical.
10. In this study we regard the anti-bacterial and the antioxidant activities to polyphenols such as (Phenolic acids, Flavonoides and Tannins).
11. Both extracts (ethanolic extract of physalis peruvianae and water extract of Hyphaene thebaica) had four types of phenolic acids (Chlorogenic acid, Caffeicacid ,Galic acid and Coumaric acid ) , four types of flavoinodes (Rutin, Querctin , Catechin and Hesperidine) and exhibited high value of tannins, and it may be responsible for anti-bacterial and the antioxidant effects.
12. Based on the results of this study, recommendation can be given to use the (ethanolic extract of physalis peruvianae and water extract of Hyphaene thebaica),at concentration 50%,as natural anti-bacterial and antioxidant agents to minimize the side effects from using the chemical synthetic antibiotic or chemical preservatives.
