Abstract

SUMMARY
C
hronic spontaneous urticaria is associated with an altered immune response related to chronic systemic inflammation. Low-grade inflammation can stimulate the release of a lot of adipokines, including leptin.
Our study was a case control study conducted at the Allergy and immunology outpatient clinic at Ain Shams University hospital on 60Patients diagnosed as having chronic spontaneous urticaria according to the EAACI/GALEN/EDF criteria, and 30 Disease-free controls who were group-matched with patients for age and sex, with no co morbidity, with normal body mass index and who were recruited from among relatives of patients, hospital workers and nursing staff.
All cases were subjected to detailed history and clinical examination, calculation of the body mass index (BMI) (weight/height2), CBC, ESR, CRP, Thyroid profile (serum free T3, free T4, TSH), AST, ALT, skin prick test or specific IgE for common allergen, and measurement of serum leptin level after overnight fasting by ELISA.
In our study we measured serum leptin level in chronic spontaneous urticaria patients and correlated it to urticaria severity which was assessed by urticaria activity score.
All data were collected, tabulated and statistically analyzed revealing that serum leptin level is increased in chronic spontaneous urticaria patients and also we found that it has a significant positive correlation with urticaria severity
