Abstract

Bridges are basic and important components in any of the various transportation networks, especially road networks. And existing bridges in the Arab Republic of Egypt are undoubtfully important in overall transportation network to contribute significantly to economic growth and social development of our country. However, concrete condition of these bridges has been generally agreed among field engineers to be in poor quality and bad surface appearance. The above-analyzed problems decrease physical condition of bridges. Therefore, they must be eliminated as soon as possible in order to ensure bridges of expected quality and serviceability and to smoothly serve for modern traffic. Here is an attempt to illustrate several maintenance strategies for overcoming current problems of reinforced concrete bridges in Egypt.
Thus the objective of this thesis is to determine the most appropriate slabs repair and beams strengthening methods, using the Value Engineering concepts, which is used for comparing the different alternatives for beams strengthening methods which were: reinforced concrete jacket, fiber reinforced polymer jacket, steel jacket and external prestressing, for slabs topping methods which were: topping with ordinary reinforced concrete, topping with ferrocement concrete, topping with high strength concrete, topping with steel fiber concrete, topping with self-compacted concrete and topping with polymer concrete. For achieving the required basic function after considering the main significant factors and without affecting the desired quality.
Value Engineering is an organized process that has been effectively used by a wide range of companies and establishments to achieve function improvement, time reduction, and improving performance. And the success of the VE process is due to its ability to identify opportunities to remove unnecessary costs while assuring quality, reliability, performance, and other critical factors that meet or exceed customer’s expectations.
The potential use of the Value Engineering (VE) process can be used effectively in developing the optimum maintenance systems of reinforced concrete bridges finding that the appropriate alternative in reinforced concrete beams strengthening method was Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Jacket, and Topping with High-Strength Concrete is more economical and efficient than the traditional system in slabs topping system in reinforced concrete bridges.
