Abstract

Cancer continues to represent the largest cause of mortality in the world and claims over 6 million lives every year. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women and remains one of the most common causes of cancer-related deaths in women. Natural and synthetic thymic preparations have been used to enhance the reactivity of the host immune system to combat several diseases including cancer. GTE, a gross thymic extract commercially known as Thymax was used in this study. GTE obtained from pathogen-free pigs is a complex of thymosin, thymomodulin and many other peptides. Total of (90) adult female Swiss albino mice were used. After acclimatization animals were inoculated intramuscularly with Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma Cells (EAC) to develop solid tumors. GTE was administrated orally (5.45mg/kg/day) to mice 6 days/a week, either 14 days prior tumor cells inoculation or 9 days post inoculation to mice bearing palpable tumors. The present study showed that GTE (Thymax), may have chemopreventive potential to reduce tumor incidence and tumor growth through different mechanisms including, cell cycle arrest, apoptotic induction in tumor cells via mitochondrial-dependent pathway, suppressing cancer cell proliferation, and stimulating the immune system. Data in the current study suggest that much interest should be given to Thymax treatment, which appeared to be bio safe and does not have any side-effects. The effect of Thymax on other cancer models should be investigated. The results of the current study may suggest the applicability of Thymax for breast cancer prevention and/or treatment in clinical trials as well
