Abstract

Introduction:
Hepatitis C is known to be the infection of the liver is caused by the hepatitis C virus. Globally It affect a lot of people The virus spreads through the blood or body fluids of an infected person it can transmit through blood to blood contact like in Sharing drugs and needles , Being stuck by infected needles and a mother can pass it to a child. Jaundice, Stomach pain, Loss of appetite, Nausea and Fatigue is the most common symptoms of the disease.
Anxiety is a feeling of uneasiness and worry usually appears to be generalized and unfocused as an overreaction to a situation that is only subjectively seen as menacing. It is often accompanied by symptoms like muscular tension, restlessness, fatigue and problems in concentration. Anxiety can be appropriate in normal people, but when experienced regularly the individual may suffer from an anxiety disorder.
The frequency of anxiety and psychosocial disorders seems to be raised at the patients diagnosed with chronic hepatitis c. Patients with chronic hepatitis C suggest a higher grade of stigmatization from society and they usually fear of death and that leads to increase their anxiety and depression. Patients usually try to use different coping patterns to cope with the bad effect of the disease. These patients should be assessed psychologically for signs of anxiety or depression as these psychiatric diseases can affect badly the treatment process.
Aim of the study:
This study aimed to assess anxiety and coping pattern and relationship between it among patient with hepatitis C virus.
The aim was achieved through answering the following questions:
- What are the levels of anxiety among patient with hepatitis C virus?
- What are the coping patterns used by hepatitis C virus patient to face anxiety?
Research setting:
The study was carried out at Internal Medicine unit of EL-Ahrar governmental public hospital at zagazig sharkia . It is affiliated to the Ministry of Health and Population (MHP).
Subject and methods
Patients with hepatitis C who have liver cirrhosis and came to the medical unit in El-ahrar hospital for treatment.
Study type:
A descriptive study type was utilized.
Sample type:
It was a convenience sample.
Sample size:
The subject of the present study included 100 patients with hepatitis C who have liver cirrhosis and came to the medical unit in El-ahrar hospital for treatment.
Tools of data collection:
Part I:
It deals with socio-demographic characteristics of studied patients with hepatitis C virus who suffer from liver cirrhosis and their history of the disease.
Part II:
This part represents levels of anxiety among studied patients with hepatitis C virus who have liver cirrhosis.
Part III:
This part represents coping patterns among studied patients with hepatitis C virus who have liver cirrhosis.
Part IV:
It illustrated the relationship between socio-demographic characteristics with anxiety and coping patterns it also illustrated the relationship between disease characteristics with anxiety and coping patterns.
Part V:
That part displayed the relationship between anxiety and coping patterns among studied patients with hepatitis C virus who have liver cirrhosis.
The findings of the present study reached to the following
Conclusion:
Hepatitis C affects a lot of people around the world and Egypt has the highest rate of hepatitis C in the world. It has a very bad effect in physical and psychological health of the patients.
People with hepatitis C usually suffer from sever anxiety because of fearing of death and the pain that they feel from the nature of the disease and the side effect of the medications that they take. Most of the patient in the sample were males and live in rural area the mean age of the studied sample was 48± 4. The patients in the sample was using different coping patterns to cope with anxiety and the pain that result from the disease and its treatment but the majority of these coping patterns where ineffective which can’t help the patients to reduce their anxiety.
