Abstract

Air pollutants distributed at Damietta port area (nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, ozone gas and suspended particulates of less than 10 microns) were monitored using a continuous environmental monitoring station for ambient air within three years (36 months) during the period from January 2013 to December 2015 in addition to monitoring of various meteorological parameters (temperature, relative humidity, wind direction, wind speed, atmospheric pressure).
1. NO2, SO2, CO and O3 were measured using continuous monitoring devices installed in an environmental monitoring station for ambient air inside Damietta port over three years on a daily basis during the period from January 2013 to December 2015. The results indicated that the annual averages for the concentrations of these gases in 2013, 2014 and 2015 were within the permissible limits compared to the Egyptian Environmental Law No. 4/1994.
2. PM10 was measured using a continuous monitoring device installed within an environmental monitoring station for ambient air inside Damietta port over three years on a daily basis during the period from January 2013 to December 2015. The results indicated that the annual averages of PM10 concentrations in 2013 and 2015 were higher than the limits allowed in the Egyptian Environmental Law No. 4/1994, while the annual average for 2014 was less than the limits allowed by law.
Gaseous and dust emissions from MOPCO stacks as a case study area (CO, SO2, NOx, NH3, PM) were measured every three months over three years (2013-2015) and all the results were within the permissible limits compared to the Egyptian Environmental Law No. 4/1994. These results were used in addition to the meteorological data for the region, MOPCO stacks data and some other supporting data then inserting them in a sophisticated modelling system (AERMOD) and establishment of predictive contouring maps of air pollutants in and around Damietta industrial free zone for explaining the dispersion of these pollutants in the region and identifying the highest expected concentrations to be present in the area with a radius of about 10 kilometers.
