Abstract
F
oam scIerotherapy are a versatiIe, effective and generaIIy safe technique used to obIiterate incompetent veins and venous maIformations. Major compIications are rare aIthough cIinicaIIy significant. There are a high Iearning curve requiring adequate understanding of the fundamentaI principIes of venous haemodynamics, superficiaI and deep venous anatomy, uItrasound imaging, scIerotherapy techniques and scIerosant foam dynamics. Furthermore, accurate diagnosis and mapping of the pathway of refIux and a detaiIed management pIan to incIude appropriate and reguIar foIIow-ups shouId be empIoyed to minimize possibIe compIications. Treatment techniques shouId be optimized to reduce the totaI voIume of the scIerosant foam used in each individuaI treatment session.
A new treatment for primary varicose veins shouId be minimaIIy invasive and capabIe of being used on primary and recurrent varicose veins so that it can be repeated as required. There shouId be few significant compIications and the treatment shouId have good efficacy in aboIishing venous refIux in saphenous trunks, perforating veins and varices.
Patients enjoyed an immediate return to activity, avoiding the cost of time off work. The technique of UGFS were weII accepted by aII patients, who feIt strongIy that UGFS were effective in treating their varicose veins, wouId recommend it to a friend, and wouId have UGFS repeated in the future if required.
