Abstract Medicinal plants have been used from ancient times to attempt cures for diseases and to relive physical suffering. They’re characterized by their efficacy against many diseases without any notable adverse effects. Helminths are affecting millions of livestock resulting in great economic losses in domestic and farm yard animal. The most effective way for treatment and prevention of helminthic infestations is the use of chemical anthelmintic drugs, but their extensive use has resulted in the development of resistance in helminth parasites. Further, residual toxicity, adverse reactions, high cost, are problems associated with these agents. That makes the direction towards medicinal plants is a must. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible effects of the aqueous extracts of Thymus vulgaris and Artemisia herba alba as anthelmintic medicinal plants on the fertility of male rats as well as some hematological and serum biochemical parameters and histopathological studies in liver, kidney, testis and epididymis. A total of twenty-four (24) adult healthy male rats were used in this study and were divided into 3 groups (the control group: given 5ml normal saline/day /for 14 days), Thymus group: given 5ml of Thymus extract /day/for 14 days and Artemisia group: given 2ml Artemisia extract /day/14 days) The results showed a significant increase in serum testosterone hormone level in both treated groups, non- significant changes in serum biochemical parameters with significant increase in serum total protein and albumin levels in both treated groups. In addition, there was a significant increase in RBCs count, Hb, MCH, MHC and WBCs count in both treated groups, with some mild histopathological changes. According to the results of our study we concluded that, both extracts have a favorable effect on the fertility of male rats, with some mild alterations in some serum biochemical, hematological and histopathological examinations. |
