Abstract

Scope and Standards of Practice is based on the premise that “nursing professional development is a vital phase of lifelong learning in which nurses engage to develop and maintain competence, enhance professional nursing practice, and support achievement of career goals”.
Egyptian Government recognized the need for improving quality of university education standards and strengthening nursing education system to undergraduate nurses with knowledge and skills. In line with international trends, availability of qualified & competent health-care professionals is the key for delivering a quality health-care services.
Advanced practice in nursing has become a dominant focus of undergraduate nursing education over the past two decades. So nurses who do not keep upgrading their skills will be left behind by work place changes and lifelong learning is the only answer for a competitive future.
The present study aimed to assess effect of accreditation on faculty of nursing students’ academic achievement. This was attained through. Assessment of student’s achievements through assessing theoretical and practical measurements and assessment of barriers which limit or prevent their academic achievements of maternal and neonatal health nursing skills.
The study was conducted at the maternity and gynecological nursing Department of Faculty of Nursing at Ain Shams University.
The study sample consisted of (200) students recruited from the academic year 2015/2016 and it was working sample and (188) students’ progress for the final exam. third year nursing students enrolled in maternity and gynecological nursing department during one academic year (2015-2016) in faculty of nursing Ain shams University in both semesters.
The data were collected through:
1) Structured interviewing questionnaire sheet:
Arabic structured interviewing questionnaire sheet was designed by researcher after reviewing the relative literature. The questionnaire was in the form of data collection to assess the effect of accreditation on faculty of nursing students’ academic achievement; it was concerned with the following:
2) Likert scale: to assess student’s satisfaction regarding to accreditation.
Results of the present study revealed that:
• Concerning learning outcome as a factor interfering with students’ achievement, the study found that (87.45%) of studied students were satisfied, while (12.55 %) were unsatisfied and uncertain.
• Concerning program, outcome and policies of faculty as a factor interfering with students’ achievement it found that (74.66%) of the studied students were satisfied, while (25.34%) were unsatisfied and uncertain.
• As regards the relation of general characteristics with the student’s academic achievement level the present study clarified that there was a statistically significant difference between general characteristic of students and student’s academic achievement level.
• A statistically significant relation existed between final grades and learning outcome as a factor interfering with their academic achievement level.
• There was a highly significant difference between student’s satisfaction and students with program, outcome and policies of faculty as a factor interfering with their achievement level in theoretical branch.
The present study recommended that:
• Improving the readiness of clinical settings for clinical practice such as enough facilities, supplies and equipment to enable nursing students to practice what they were learned in the classroom safely and efficiently to increase student’s satisfaction.
• Developing training program for new recruited of clinical instructors and faculty of nursing staff regarding communication skill and student’s learning needs to increase student’s satisfaction.
• Upgrading new strategies related to learning and teaching process at nursing faculties & institutions of nursing in Cairo to improve student’s achievement.
• Further research study to study the gap between the theoretical and practical part are required to improve student’s learning achievements.
