Abstract

Introduction: Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a biomaterial that has been introduced as an alternative approach to enhance wound healing, inducing beneficial early granulation tissue formation, inhibiting destructive inflammation during the healing phase, and promoting re-epithelialization and also angiogenesis. Purpose: The aim of this study was to test whether applying HA gel intrasocket after mandibular third molar extraction could affect the incidence of Alveolar Osteitis (AO). Materials and Methods: 64 patients requiring extraction of mandibular third molar with various degrees of extraction difficulties were assigned for the study. Thirty-two patients were considered as a Control (C) i.e the extraction socket was left without intervention, and an equal number as a Study (S) i.e. HA gel (Gengigel®) was administered into the socket. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 23.0, and the statistical difference (P) was considered significant for values less than or equal to 0.05. Results: There was a statistical significant difference between C and S regarding AO incidence (P=0.011). Conclusion: In conclusion, within the limitations of this study, intrasocket application of HA gel after extraction of mandibular third molars was proved to be an effective method for AO prevention and decreasing postoperative pain.
