Abstract

Critically ill patients need parenteral or enteral feeding
due to the impossibility of feeding them orally. The nasogastric
tube is the most used way for administering EF to critically ill
patients because of its easier and physiological access. Early EF
plays an important role in caring for these patients to ensure
optimal recovery (The Spanish Centre for Evidence Based
Nursing, 2012).
Aim of the study
This study aimed to assess nurses’ performance regarding
nasogastric tube feeding among critically ill patient.
This aim would be achieved through the following:
1. Assess the nurses’ knowledge regarding nasogastric tube
feeding among critically ill patients.
2. Assess the nurses’ practice regarding nasogastric tube feeding
among critical ill patients.
3. Assess the nurses’ attitude regarding nasogastric tube feeding
among critical ill patients.Research question:
1. What are the nurses’ knowledge, practices and attitudes
regarding nasogastric tube feeding among critically ill
patients at critical care unit?
2. What are the relation between nurses’ knowledge,
practices and attitudes regarding nasogastric tube feeding
among critically ill patients at critical care unit?
Research design:
A descriptive design used in carrying out the study.
Methodology:
Setting:
The study was conducted at Cairo University Hospitals in
two critical care units (critical care unit 3, and emergency
department 5).
Subject:
This study included all available nurses in the above
mentioned settings. Interview questionnaire is applied with
forty nurses; 12 from emergency department 5, 28 from
critical care units. The study included nurses from both
genders, with different ages, educational levels and years of
experience Tools of data collection:
Three tools were used in the current study as the following:
1. Self-administered questionnaire sheet: this tool was
developed by researcher in Arabic language to suit the
nurses’ level of understanding and divided into two parts as
follows:
A) Demographic characteristics of nurses: include age,
gender, level of education, years of experience and previous
courses.
B) Nurses’ knowledge: this part was developed by the
researcher after reviewing the recent and relevant literature.
As regard definition, indications, contraindication,
complications and preventive measures and technique before,
during and after procedures.
II) Nurses practices observational checklists: consists of 40
steps to assess nurses’ practice related to care before, during
and after nasogastric tube feeding.
III) Nurses attitude questionnaire sheet: consists of 28
statements to assess nurses’ attitude regarding nasogastric
tube feeding.
