Abstract Artificial cardiac pacemaker is an electronic device used to control long-term heart rhythm problems to save patient’s life from complications as sudden death. Nurses play an important role in caring and educating of patients with permanent pacemaker (PPM) to improve their quality of life. Aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of the educational program on quality of life of patients with permanent pacemaker. Subject and methods: Design a quasi-experimental design. Sample: A purposeful study subject of 100 patients, which divided into two equally matched groups’ the study and control groups. Setting: this study was conducted at the programming outpatients Clinic in the Catheterization department at Ain Shams University Hospitals over 6 months. Tools for data collection: they consisted of questionnaire to assess the knowledge, performance, compliance and quality of life applied in three phases (pre, post and follow up) for both groups. The result of this study showed that more than three quarter of the patients had unsatisfactory knowledge, performance, compliance and quality of life, which improved after implementing of educational program and after three months. Conclusion: The patients who were exposed to the designed educational program showed an improvement in their knowledge, performance, compliance and QOL, than those who were not exposed to the educational program. This improvement was manifested by an increased satisfactory level of knowledge, performance, compliance, at post and follow up after three months, and improvement in the QOL in the different parameters (physical, social, psychological and functional). Recommendations: All patients with PPM and their families should receive adequate knowledge and performance to help them to live with the PPM, comply with prescribed therapeutic regimen, improve their quality of life, and enhance the coping with the device. |
