Abstract

This work has been carried out to investigate the ameliorating effect of Asparagus officinalis (250 mg/kg b.w. P.O.), against CdCl2 (267.27 mg/l induced hepatic and renal toxicity. Forty male albino rats were used. They were divided into four main groups 10 rats each. group І (control group), provided with drinking water for 12 weeks. group ІІ (Cadmium group), given cadmium chloride in drinking water for 12 weeks at 267.27 mg/l. group ІІІ (asparagus group), administered with methanolic extract of Asparagus officinalis at dose 250 mg/kg body weight (dissolved in DW) by oral intubations daily for 12 weeks. group ІV (protective group), administered with methanolic extract of Asparagus officinalis at dose 250 mg/kg (dissolved in DW) by oral intubations daily, together with cadmium chloride in drinking water for 12 weeks. Administration of CdCl2 alone to rats induced significant increase in serum ALT and AST activities, urea, TC, TG, LDL, VLDL, hepatic and renal MDA content and non significant increase in creatinine levels. Moreover, nonsignificant decrease in HDL and decrease in GSH content, SOD andCAT activity. In addition, it increased expression of HMG coA reductase, FAS enzymes and TNFα. Also, it had no effect on HSL expression. CdCl2 exposure caused severs histopathological changes in liver and kidney. Asparagus administration improved the antioxidant state, biochemical, genetic parameters and histological structure of liver and kidney tissues.
