Abstract

Burn injury is the most important health problem in many countries of the world. Burn victims are obviously at high risk for nosocomial infection due to the nature of the burn injury itself, immunocompromizing effect of burns, prolonged hospital stays, and intensive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures..
Aim of the work:The study was conducted to predict risk factors for infection occurrence in patients with burn injury.
Subjects and method: Analytical cross sectional study research design was used in this study. The present study included 100 adult burned patients of both sexes and all available nurses (30) who accepted to participate in the study.Four tools were used for data collection. Patient interviewing questionnaire, burn parameters sheet, Nurses, questionnaire( Part 1: Sociodemographic data for nurses,,Part 2: Observational checklists for some procedures adopted in burn unit includedhand washing, hand scrubbing before burn wound dressing, burn wound dressing&proper use of personal protective equipment) andhospital Environment Observational Checklists.
Results:There were statistically significant difference between local signs of burn wound infection and age group, middle age group had higher percent than older adults. There was statistically significant difference in local signs of infection between male and female and also married & single. Furthermore a statistical significant difference was found between wound infection and education level. For length of hospital stay, there was statistically significant difference between patients who stay more than one month and less than one month in hospital. Nurses performance regarding hand washing, hand scrubbing were poor, while their performance concerningburn wound dressing were relatively fair. Also, their performance regarding proper use of personal protective equipment was fair.
Recommendation:Nurses, compliance with infection control guidelines should be emphasized. The isolation care unit should be available for the infected patients and the patient with high TBSA% is essential in the prevention of hospital acquired infection.
