Abstract

The study aims to study the environmental impact of occurrence of aquatic plant (water hyacinth) on the removing the contaminants from the drainage water polluted with domestic waste water.
El Khairy agricultural drain was selected to achieve the objectives of the study, which is located at El Behaira governorate with length of 22.4 Km.
A reach of 8.5 lengths was selected to study the self-purification of the drain in case of aquatic plants occurrence. Four scenarios were selected and conducted.
The four scenarios were,
• First scenario was applied by sampling the water and conducting the field measurements in absence of aquatic plant (water hyacinth).
• Second scenario was applied in occurrence of water hyacinth at a distance of 2.5 Km from the intake point of the studied drain.
• Third scenario was applied by located the water hyacinth at a distance of 4.5 Km from the studied drain.
• Fourth scenario was applied by located the water hyacinth at two locations distance of 2.5 and 4.5 Km from the studied drain.
The results of the seasonal variations clear that the concentrations of the contaminantes in summer were higher than the other seasons except NH4, where the highest value occurred in autumn.
The trends of removal efficiency followed:
• polynomial regressions for all the pollutants during the different seasons under the different scenarios except the trends of Cu removal during summer under scenario (1), removal of phosphate during autumn under scenario (2), removal of Zinc during spring under scenario (2), removal of turbidity during autumn under scenario 3 and removal of cupper during summer removal of Zinc during autumn under scenario 4 where they followed linear trend.
• The trends of the removal efficiency due to the water movement (scenario1) or the three scenarios of occurrence of water hyacinth had high significant coefficient R2
The results of the model reveal that the simulated results of the different scenarios during the different seasons were closed to the observed results.
The study concluded that:
All the parameters of the water quality of the drainage water decreased due the self purification phenomena that occurred due to the water movement or due to the occurrence of water hyacinth except DO and EC and pH.
• The study concluded that the occurrence of water hyacinth had positive impact on removing the studied pollutants. The impact of water hyacinth on removing the pollutant was higher than the impact of water transport (movement).
• There was no significant impact on removing the pollutants due to the differences of the water hyacinth locations.
The study recommended that:
The drains of the first order or those used for navigation and exposed to pollution from the different sources, it is recommended not to use any aquatic plants for removing the pollutants and let the water movement to a chive the pollutants removal.
Water hyacinth as aquatic in spite of its high efficiency in removing pollutants from the polluted drainage water.
