Abstract

There has been an increase in caesarean section rate over the past 20 years, which is not uniform but associated with wide variations between and within countries.
Many theories try to explain this rise in caesarean delivery rates as it may be fear of litigation, reluctance to implement the active management of labour, a lowering threshold concerning the decision, fetal monitoring, decreased use of forceps, improved safety of caesarean section and increased use of labour induction.
Recently, both health professionals and researchers expressed concern about rise in caesarean section, with some referring to it as an emerging global epidemic.
The present study was conducted at Ain-Shams University Maternity Hospital and Ghamra Military Hospital during the period between 1st of January 2011 to 30th of June 2011.
This study was conducted to determine the rate of cesarean section whether primary or repeated, indications for cesarean section, measures which should be taken to reduce high cesarean section rate, surgical techniques for cesarean section, intra and post operative maternal and fetal complications.
During the study period we collected data of all pregnant women who were admitted and delivered by caesarean section at Ain-Shams University Maternity and women Hospital and Ghamra Military Hospital. These data were collected from the patients’ admission sheets, included: history, examinations, investigations, intrapartum data and postpartum data. We also collected the total number of vaginal deliveries at each hospital during the same period for detecting the rates of caesarean section.
The caesarean section pattern was compared in the 2 hospitals as regards rate, type, indications, complications, neonatal outcomes and surgical techniques.
