Abstract Abstract Introduction: Workplace violence in general is a major problem affecting health and productivity of health care worker. Aim of the study: investigate workplace violence against nurses in two different hospitals through determining types of workplace violence facing nurses; identifying risk factors lead to workplace violence against nurses; and identifying the effect of workplace violence on nurses. Subject & methods: A descriptive comparative design was utilized with a sample of 115 nurses. The study was conducted at the emergency and surgical departments at El-demerdash University Hospital which affiliated to Ain Shams University, and Shubra General Hospital which affiliated to the Ministry of Health (MOH). Data were collected by using a self administered questionnaire sheet. Result: exposure to verbal and psychological violence was the highest among nurses (27.8%), followed by sexual violence (5.2%), while physical violence was the lowest among nurses (4.3%). Conclusion: Present study indicated that nurses working in the emergency departments are 12.5 times more prone to be exposed to workplace violence compared with those in surgical departments. Recommendation: the following recommendations are suggested, institutions need to develop a workplace violence policy which explains the process that should occur after an employee has been assaulted. Top management need to develop a formal reporting mechanism and advertise nursing proper way to fill. Keywords: workplace violence, nurses. |
