Abstract Anemia is a serious problem facing elderly people and it`s prevalence increase with advancing age. Causes of anemia are divided into three broad groups: nutrient-deficiency anemia, most often iron deficiency, anemia of chronic disease or inflammation; and unexplained anemia. Anemia even mild represents an independent risk factor for a variety of adverse outcomes in both community-dwelling and institutionalized older adults. Anemia has a negative impact on health status of older adult and it is associated with increased mortality, poorer health-related quality of life, and loss of physical function, independent of underlying disease status. The exact pathway through which anemia may negatively affect physical function has not been studied extensively regardless of the underlying cause of the low hemoglobin level. It is an observational study carried out to assess the prevalence of anemia and find the relationship between presence of anemia and the physical performance of the elderly patients attending the outpatient clinics hospital in Mansoura city. The study carried out in geriatric outpatient clinics at specialized medical hospital and the general hospital in Mansoura city after taking the consent of the managers from March 2012 to September 2013.Using DDS research .com soft ware, for sample size calculation the study subjects amounted to 200 elderly patients fulfilled previous inclusion and exclusion criteria as mentioned before. |
