Abstract

In this study the prevalence of encysted metacercariae (EMC), the effect
of water pollution on the incidence of EMC in Oreochromis spp. and Clarias
gariepenus fishes, application of electrophoretic analysis as an aid for diagnosis
and identification of EMC, studying the survivability of EMC in muscles of fish at
different temperatures and the effect of detected EMC on the nutritive value of
infected fish has been done. The isolated EMC were Diplostomatid,
Posthodiplostomatid, Clinostomatid, Euclinostomatid, Haplorchid, Heterophyid,
Cyathocotylid and Cyanodiplostomatid, while the recovered digenetic trematodes
were Diplostomum tilapiae, Haplorchis pumilio, Pygidiopsis genata, Centrocestus
armatus, Prohemistomum vivax and Mesostephanus appendiculatus. There was a
positive correlation between organic water pollution and the prevalence of EMC.
The antigens of some isolated EMC were fractionated by SDS-PAGE, and
different bands with different molecular weights have been recorded. Freezing of
infected fish flesh at-4 CO for 72 hrs and at -18Co for 48 hrs was sufficient to kill
all the EMC in the infected fish. Protein contents increased, while lipids contents
decreased significantly as result of increasing the infection rate of EMC.
