Vegetable crops have significant importance in the pattern of Egyptian food consumption. This research is aiming at studying and analysing the marketing systems of three of the major vegetable crops in Kalyoubia, onion, cabbage and strawberry. The study covered analysis of marketing channels, functions, marketing margins, cost and returns to farmers, wholesalers, retailers. Primary and secondary data were utilized for the analysis, primary data were obtained through personal enter viewers using quesionirs directed to random of farmers, wholesalers, retailers in the year 2006. Time series secondary data were obtained from published and non-published sources of data covering the period 1995-2006.Kalyoubia produce yearly an average of 72000 Tons of winter onion and 33000 Tons of summer onion cabbage yearly production averaged 50000 Tons in winter and 30000 in the rest of the year Average yearly production of strawberry in Kalyoubia was 29000 Tons. In winter the data indicated increasing trends in quantities produced in Kalyoubia of the three crops through the period of study. Production of winter onion increased at an average annuals rate of 5.3% while summer onion reported a slight decline. Total production of cabbage increased at an annual rate of 0.85%. Winter production of cabbage declined slightly while summer production increased. Total production of strawberry in Kalyoubia has been increasing significantly. The total production doubled through the period of study”. Productivity per Fedden increased at an annual rate of 5.2% in the same period”. Area of strawberry has been increasing at an annual rate of 4%. Primary data were analysed for the three crops. The data showed that small farms receive lower prices per ton of their crops. For onion farms less than one feddan received LE 68 per ton while farms of 3-5 feddans received LE 73.4 per ton. This price include costs of picking, sorting, grading and packing. Marketing margin therefore decrease with increase in area of landholding. The farmer receives 56% of the consumer price. The wholesaler receives 21.8% and the retailer receives 22.2% of the consumer price of onion. The study analyzed prices in all marketing channels. It showed that farmers receive higher prices in large markets of Banha and El-Obour where the wholesaler get only a percentage of the selling price as a commission. Similarly, small farms of cabbage crops receive lower prices for their crops. The farmer receives 55.8% of the consumer price. The wholesaler receives 18.2% and the retailer receives 26.02% of the consumer price. Farmers get higher prices in large markets Retailer pay lower prices in small village markets. Strawberry farms receive 58.5% of the consumer price. Wholesaler receives 16% and retailer receives 25.5% of the consumer price. Wholesaler prices are higher in large markets. Cost of marketing services were estimated for the three crops. Costs are shared by farmers, wholesalers and retailers. For onion marketing costs paid per ton were LE 85 by farmer, LE 52.1 by wholesaler, and LE 104.1 by retailer. For cabbage, the farmer paid per ton were LE 50.9 LE 36.9 by the wholesaler, and LE 65.4 by retailer. For strawberry cost of marketing per ton were LE 168.9 paid by farmer, LE 91.2 paid by the wholesaler, and LE 227.3 paid by retailer. Net returns were estimated for each of the farmer, whole saler, and retailer of the three crops. The average net returns to onion farmers was 55.5% of all costs of production and marketing services. The onion wholesaler obtained an average of 24.5% and the retailer gets 20%. The average net returns to cabbage farmers was 52.3% of all costs of production and marketing services. The cabbage wholesaler obtained an average of 23.6% and the retailer gets 24.1%. The average net returns to strawberry farmers was 50.5% of all costs of production and marketing services. The strawberry wholesaler obtained an average of 24.5% and the retailer gets 25%.
